This presentation is part of the Parsons Memorial Lodge Summer Series and will take place at the Parsons Lodge in Tuolumne Meadows. The lodge can be accessed via a short trail beginning at either the Lembert Dome parking area or the Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center. Please allow 30 minutes to walk to the lodge.

Practice and Process: Prints and Writings in the Mountains

On August 2nd and 3rd, as part of the Parsons Memorial Lodge Summer Series, poet Gary Snyder and woodblock artist Tom Killion presented their work to a captive audience. Several staff members from The Ansel Adams Gallery ventured up to the lodge, which sits on the far side of Tuolumne Meadows, to partake in Practice and Process: Prints and Writings in the Mountains.

At the lodge, the audience was able to listen to beat poet Gary Snyder read from both recent writings and older works, including poems written in the 1950’s when Snyder worked on the trail crew in Yosemite National Park. Artist Tom Killion presented a slide show of his beautiful woodblock work in addition to giving the audience an in-depth look at exactly how each of these prints are created.

Back in 1995, Gary Snyder and Tom Killion combined efforts to publish a hand-printed book titled The High Sierra of California. The book, which couples Killion’s woodblock work with Synder’s poetry, was published as a trade edition in 2002. Currently, the two are working on their second book together titled Walking Tamalpais.

New Photography Classes Offered through The Ansel Adams Gallery

The Ansel Adams Gallery is now offering 4-hour photography classes in Yosemite National Park. On your next visit to the park, we invite you to join one of our staff photographers to improve your camera skills while creating beautiful compositions of the Yosemite landscape.

Offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 1-5 PM, Using Your Digital Camera will allow participants to gain an understanding of their digital cameras, whether it be an advanced point and shoot or a D-SLR. You will learn the basics of operating the camera – how to focus, work with depth of field, proper exposure, reading your histogram, ISO & shutter speed selection and more while creating your own unique compositions of Yosemite.

Offered every Friday and Sunday from 1-5 PM, In the Footsteps of Ansel Adams is a program designed to take participants to several of the locations where photographer Ansel Adams composed some of his most famous Yosemite images. At each location, you will have the opportunity to see the same image through your lens and work more in-depth with the scene around you. You will receive insight into Ansel’s life and photography as well as basic lessons in photographic technique.

Classes cost $95.00 per participant. For further information or to register, please contact our gallery at (800) 568-7398.

Great Hikes in Yosemite: The Panorama Trail

One of the most scenic trails leading into Yosemite Valley, the Panorama Trail offers sweeping views of the Sierra landscape including some of the most famous granite formations and waterfalls Yosemite has to offer. At 9-miles one-way, the most enjoyable way to start this trail is to take the shuttle bus service to Glacier Point and begin the descent into Yosemite Valley.

The gradual descent back to the Valley floor gives hikers time to savor the views along the way. Within the first mile of the hike, panoramic views of Half Dome and the High Sierra remain in view. Shortly after, the trail will cross Illouette Creek, offering a spectacular view of Illouette Fall.

The trail continues with great views of Glacier Point and Yosemite Valley. As the half-way point of the trail approaches, the back-side of Half Dome, one of Yosemite’s most famous granite structures, comes into view. Shortly after, the trail links up with the Mist Trail to take you on the final descent into Yosemite Valley past Vernal and Nevada Falls.

The best time of the year to take this hike is June – August, when the trail is snow-free and the waterfalls along the way are still flowing strong.

Telegraph Fire - A Look Back

Residents in Mariposa County who were evacuated from their homes have now been able to return to their properties. Yosemite National Park continues to operate on a normal basis while electrical problems are being addressed.

The photographs included in this posting were taken by Ansel Adams Gallery vice-president Claudia Welsh during the height of the fire.

Early Morning in Cooks Meadow, Yosemite Valley, July 31, 2008

After days of being filled with smoke due to the neighboring Telegraph Fire, Yosemite is once again filled with clear, blue skies and gorgeous views.

The Gallery is Open for Business!

After almost 7 days of being closed due to power outages from the Telegraph Fire, The Ansel Adams Gallery has officially re-opened as of 11am this morning. Thanks to a generator, the gallery will continue to operate during normal business hours (9am - 6pm/7 days per week) via generator until full electricity is re-established.

The Telegraph Fire, which started outside of park boundaries last Friday, is the cause of no electricity in Yosemite National Park. Now 60% contained as of this afternoon, things are looking up for Yosemite and the affected Sierra communities.
